Bunions are the result of a misaligned big toe that results in an unsightly bump. This presses against the shoe and causes pain. In many cases, you can get relief from bunions by changing to a shoe with a wider toe box, or by using various pads to relieve the pressure. Analgesics or ice packs can reduce the pain and swelling. Your podiatrist may recommend a splint to be worn at night or put you on an exercise program. Surgical correction of a bunion is always a last resort. If it's required in your case, it'll probably involve removing the bump, as well as some bone surgery, to straighten the toe. There may be considerable swelling for the first week after surgery. Rest, particularly with the foot elevated, and ice packs are the normal remedies during this period. You can expect to be on crutches with some sort of protective shoe for three to six weeks. Complete healing, especially if bone regrowth is involved, may require a year or more. Consult a foot expert in your area for more information on bunion surgery.
