The temperature light on your car is intended to warn you if your engine is overheating. An engine should not overheat if the cooling system is properly filled and is working normally, even during hot weather, or stop-and-go driving. If the temperature light comes on, pull over to the side of the road and shut the engine off. The most common cause of engine overheating is loss of coolant. When the car has had ample time to cool down, open the radiator cap and check the coolant level to see if it's low. If it's low, you'll need to add water or an equal mixture of antifreeze and water. Remember, do not attempt to open the radiator when the engine is hot. The radiator contains hot water under high pressure. Opening the cap could allow steam and water to blow out and burn you. After you've checked the coolant level, you'll want to visually inspect the system for leaks. The most common leaks occur in the radiator and heater hoses, the water pump, and the radiator. Replace any damaged parts as soon as you're able to. If your car continues to overheat, have it immediately diagnosed by a technician who can check for internal problems. Keep in mind that continually driving a car that's overheating can cause serious damage to the engine, so pay attention to the temperature light.
